I first learned of the Kentucky Perinatal Association, in 1989 while attending a meeting in London, Kentucky as a nursing student.I remember the day and the speakers well. That was the day, I knew I wanted to be a pediatric nurse. In 2015, I was reminded of this organization by a fellow nurse. She said, “Jan, this one is all of the things you care about.” The focus and KPA conference agenda were about improving newborn outcomes. This was at a time when Kentucky saw a rapidly climbing infant mortality rate for many preventable reasons. What I hear, and learn at every event, every meeting is how we can make a difference in maternal and infant outcomes. That knowledge improves my ability every year to think and dream of new ways we can make life better for those we serve

The opportunities to learn through the Kentucky Perinatal Association are invaluable in the practice of obstetric and maternal/newborn care. The conference and regional events offer a best practice, real-world discussion for learning, innovative problem solving and lays the groundwork for improving care for Kentucky’s moms and babies. Trainings are focused on just in time, and emerging needs, the latest scientific research and with a vision of a better future.

I moved back home to Kentucky in 2009 to become Nurse-Manager of Mother/Baby, Nursery, NICU at Baptist Health Louisville. I have worked in Maternal-Child nursing for many years. My boss suggested that I join KPA and attend the annual conference. I had been involved in TIPQC while in Knoxville, Tennessee, so I was curious about KPA and their mission. I attended my first conference at Lake Cumberland(and was hooked)as I was so impressed with the outstanding speakers, topics on maternal-child health, and the opportunities to network and socialize with so many professional health care providers. KPA Membership affords you the opportunity to not only attend the Annual Conference, but other offerings throughout the state. KPA is truly focused on making a difference and improving outcomes for Kentucky Maternal/Child Health.

Almost 35 years ago I was encouraged by members of surrounding states Perinatal organizations, the Southern Perinatal Association and the National Perinatal Association that the Commonwealth of Kentucky should have its own organization. I actually served on the Southern Perinatal and was a participant with the National so I was aware of how important these organizations could be. We had two major players at the time with University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville as regionalization of care was evolving and units were developing statewide but in their very initial stages. We decided to meet at a hotel in Frankfort with a small diverse group who were vested in improving care for the mothers and babies we served. With the assistance of the National Perinatal and support from all of our partners the organization had its first meeting in Louisville at the Brown and we incorporated the organization. The Southern Perinatal actually did not survive and we became an award winning state at the National and actually became at statewide organization that was a model for service and dedication. We all have a lot to be proud of. Those leading us today are the most dedicated and talented professionals in Maternal and Child Health and we have retained our diversity to serve the Commonwealth and make it one of the best state organizations.
